The report looked at employment and the sum of payroll and employee benefits expenses as the direct economic activities that impacted the state.
In total, Iowa hospitals employed more than 70,000 people. Hospitals provided roughly $3.9 billion in salaries and benefits and another $2.3 billion on jobs that rely on hospitals. Additionally, Iowa hospital employees spent roughly $1.7 billion on local retail sales, which contributed to more than $104 million in state sales tax revenue.
