Columbus (Ind.) Regional Health has filed a June 24 WARN notice that it will lay off 50 employees. Specifically, it will close its inpatient rehabilitation unit, along with its CRH Orthopedics and Sports Medicine outpatient practice, according to a June 30 news release shared with Becker’s.

“In addition, effective Aug. 31, 2025, Columbus Regional Health will no longer provide the athletic trainer program for Indiana University-Columbus,” the news release said. “Effective Sept. 30, 2025, the program will also end for Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. and Flatrock-Haw Creek School Corp.”

The health system cited “unprecedented challenges and financial hardships” for the closures and layoffs, which have mostly been driven by outside factors, including rising supply costs, legislative scrutiny, and federal and state funding cuts. Hurdles that affect nonprofit county hospitals in particular.

Closures are expected to take place over the next few months. CRH said it is also working to support affected inpatient and practice employees, and plans to work with school corporation partners to ensure a smooth transition for its athletic trainer program.
