Pittsburgh-based health insurer Highmark plans to double the number of retail vision stores it owns in the next five years as it continues to forge ahead with its goal of creating an integrated delivery system, according to a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review report.

Highmark’s optical retail company, HVHC, has more than 570 stores in 39 states and the District of Columbia. Some its major store names are EyeMasters, ValuVision and Empire Vision.

Highmark expects the vision unit will bring in millions in extra revenue, which will help the health insurer’s bottom line as it looks to create its hospital and physician network.

Earlier this month, the Orphan’s Court of Allegheny County approved Highmark’s affiliations with West Penn Allegheny Health System in Pittsburgh and Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Jefferson Hills, Pa. Now, Highmark awaits the approval of the Pennsylvania Insurance Department for its West Penn acquisition.
