Hospitals and health systems nationwide are navigating a wave of leadership transitions as they grapple with persistent financial challenges, workforce shortages and evolving regulatory pressures. In response, several prominent health systems have appointed new CFOs in 2025 to steer their financial strategies, manage cost containment and drive operational efficiencies.

Philadelphia-based Jefferson Health appointed Michael Harrington as its new executive vice president and CFO in May. Mr. Harrington joins from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, where he had served as CFO since 2019. He succeeds John Mordach, who stepped down from the role in February after serving since March 2023. The move comes as Jefferson advances its integration of Allentown, Pa.-based Lehigh Valley Health Network, following its recent merger into a 32-hospital system comprising over 700 care sites and generating $14 billion in annual revenue.

Aurora, Colo.-based UCHealth has named Todd Hofheins CFO, effective June 23. He replaces Dan Rieber, who will retire after 18 years with the organization. Mr. Hofheins previously served as COO of Roseville, Calif.-based Adventist Health, where he also held the CFO role. He also brings financial leadership experience from Bloomington, Minn.-based HealthPartners and Renton, Was.-based Providence.

In Baltimore, the University of Maryland Medical System has appointed Noel Sousa CFO, effective July 7. Mr. Sousa has been with UC Davis Health since 1997, most recently serving as interim CFO. He will succeed Joe Hoffman, who is retiring after leading the financial division of the 11-hospital system.

Louisville, Ky.-based ScionHealth on April 8 named Doug Shirley as its new CFO. Mr. Shirley, who was previously the CFO of PathGroup and Camden, N.J.-based Cooper Health System, brings over 25 years of healthcare finance experience to the role. He has also held senior financial positions at ASC company Surgery Partners.

Wilmington, Del.-based Nemours Children’s Health appointed Caswell Samms III as executive vice president and CFO in March. Mr. Samms previously served as CFO of St. Joseph’s Health in Paterson, N.J., and WellStar Health System in Marietta, Ga. He succeeds Rodney McKendree, who retired in February.

Wellstar Health appointed John Kerndl as executive vice president and CFO in February. Mr. Kerndl previously served as CFO for Traditions Health, a $350M hospice and home health system, and held financial leadership positions at Cambridge, Mass.-based Beth Israel Lahey Health and Southfield, Mich.-based Beaumont Health System.

Overland Park, Kan.-based HCA Midwest Health, part of HCA Healthcare, appointed Jeff Ardemagni CFO in January.
