At issue in the dispute was whether HCA Midwest Health met its requirement to provide at least $653 million in charity and uncompensated care to the Kansas City community for the 10-year period ending in March 2013, according to a news release.
Kenneth Southwick, chairman of the foundation’s board of directors, said in the release the foundation is pleased that both parties reached a settlement, and the foundation will use the $15 million “to continue our mission of improving health for the uninsured and underserved in the Kansas City community.”
HCA Midwest Health President and CEO M.L. Lagarde is also pleased that the issue was resolved.
“While we remain steadfast in our belief that the company fully satisfied and exceeded its charity and uncompensated care obligations, we are a part of this community, and as a leading healthcare provider, we continue to provide tens of millions of dollars in free or uncompensated care every year,” he said in a news release. “This resolution provides additional funds for the benefit of the healthcare needs of Kansas City’s uninsured and underserved population. We are pleased that this matter has been resolved in a way acceptable to both parties.”
