The board did not explain its action, which took place in closed session, and Mr. Philips said he was not told why. “There are a variety of things I would probably try to guess at, but that’s more for (the board) to say at this point,” he said afterward.
Cary Martin, currently acting COO, was named acting CEO.
Mr. Philips came to Houston Healthcare in 2006 to be administrator and then COO of 237-bed Houston Medical Center. In 2007, he was named interim CEO of the system, following the resignation of Tony Alford, MD, who held the job for 20 months. Mr. Philips became the system CEO in June 2008.
