Federal Government Demands Florida Hospitals Pay Back $267M in Medicaid Funds

A federal government audit has found Florida hospitals were paid an excess of $267 million in Medicaid funds for medical services for low-income individuals over the past eight years and is now seeking to recover the funds this year, according to a Miami Herald report.

Some of the affected hospitals in Florida will be drastically affected by the repayment of the funds. For example, Jackson Health System in Miami would lose $47 million in Medicaid funding and Tampa (Fla.) General would lose roughly $13 million. “Essentially it wipes out any profit we would have next year,” said Mark Knight, CFO at Jackson Health System, in the report.

The affected hospitals and Florida state officials have requested a three-year repayment plan and assurance the audit’s findings are final.
