CMS halted payments to Weston, W.Va.-based William R Sharpe, Jr. Hospital Sept. 28 because it was not in compliance with the program’s requirements for a psychiatric hospital, according to the Charleston Gazette Mail.

CMS will not pay for beneficiaries who are admitted to the psychiatric hospital on or after Sept.28. It will continue to make payments for up to 30 days for patients admitted prior to that date.

“The main reasons for the decision were due to inadequate documentation and insufficient treatment plans and follow up,” Allison Alder, spokeswoman for the state Department of Health and Human Services, which runs Sharpe Hospital, told the Charleston Gazette Mail.

“[West Virginia DHHS] Secretary [Bill] Crouch continues to work with CMS regarding this issue in regards to the final determination. The health and well-being of the patients will remain our priority,” Ms. Alder added.
