The Illinois Department of Public Health will not extend a provisional license for shuttered Chicago-based Weiss Memorial Hospital, a spokesperson for the department said in a Sept. 9 statement shared with Becker’s.
“Despite having over a year to make improvements at Weiss Memorial, hospital leadership has not demonstrated the necessary improvements to safely re-open the hospital to care for the community’s residents,” the spokesperson said. “Due to these shortcomings, the Illinois Department of Public Health will not be extending the hospital’s provisional license.”
The hospital, which closed Aug. 8, 2025, is operated by Resilience Healthcare. Resilience also closed its Oak Park, Ill.-based West Suburban Medical Center June 11 after the facility’s last functional elevator broke down.
In early August, Ramco Healthcare Holdings, which owns the real estate of both Weiss Memorial and West Suburban, asked a judge to enforce a settlement that would sell the facilities for $1 to Flint, Mich.-based Insight Health Systems.
Weiss’ provisional license has been active since Aug. 8, 2025. IDPH granted Weiss leadership a 30-day license extension Aug. 2, 2026 to provide them time to show improvements had been made to the facility; however, “no major progress” had been made over the last 13 months, the IDPH spokesperson said.
Hospital leadership was required to notify IDPH under the provisional license terms of when it planned to reopen the facility, including the submission of an updated license application 60-90 days prior to reopening. The spokesperson said the department has received neither.
“A department of the State recouped $8.1 million due to Weiss that would have funded the required repairs and improvements to re-open while another department is now penalizing us for not making the improvements,” Manoj Prasad, MD, PhD, CEO, Resilience Healthcare, said in a Sept. 10 statement shared with Becker’s. “We are confused by this conflicting message as we were working through the appeals processes to allow us to re-open.”
Weiss still has the ability to reopen through a regular hospital license application process at a later date, the IDPH spokesperson said.
