CMS decertified the hospital in April 2022 after an inspection allegedly found a list of violations, including claims of patient abuse, patient overdoses and safety violations, according to the report.

The hospital, owned and operated by the San Francisco Department of Public Health, was initially set to close Sept. 13. However, the closure deadline was extended after nine patients died upon transfer to another facility, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The deadline was then extended in February and again in May.

If Laguna Honda is not certified by September, it will be forced to discharge or relocate about 700 patients, according to KRON4. Certification officials assessed the hospital and recommended  potential improvements that could be made.

The recertification process begins with submitting an application followed by inspections. After inspections are conducted, there is a period of time to show the hospital remains compliant, according to the report. A full hospital survey takes place after the compliance period ends.

The recertification process is expected to take several months.

Becker’s has reached out to the San Francisco Department of Public Health for comment.
