The funding comes through Senate Bill 97, which is sponsored by Davis, Calif.-based Public Health Advocates.
According to PHA, Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown signed the legislation Monday, establishing the Diabetes Prevention Program as part of the California budget for Medi-Cal, the state’s Medicaid program. This means the CDC-approved Diabetes Prevention Program will be covered for Medi-Cal beneficiaries beginning July 1 of next year.
Flojaune Cofer, research and state policy director for PHA, told the Los Angeles Times the state’s $5 million is expected to have a federal match of $8 million.
PHA said this makes California the third state in which the Diabetes Prevention Program is offered to Medicaid beneficiaries. The other two states are Montana and Minnesota.
