Baltimore Hospitals Suffer Financial Losses in FY 2009

Nine out of 22 hospitals in the Baltimore area suffered financial losses in fiscal year 2009, which ended June 30, according to a report by the Baltimore Business Journal.

However, most hospitals in the area profited from day-to-day operations. Only John Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and Bon Secours Hospital, both non-profit facilities, lost money on operations.

According to the Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission, Baltimore hospitals made, on average, $2.7 million last year, and some hospitals fared significantly well. Johns Hopkins Hospital earned a $67.9 million profit for the fiscal year, according to the report.
