Alegent Creighton Health Responds to Low Inpatient Occupancy Trend

Most hospitals within metropolitan Omaha, Neb., have inpatient occupancy rates at or below 57 percent, and one area health system is working to offset this trend of lower volumes, according to a World-Herald report.

Alegent Creighton Health CEO Richard Hachten told the World-Herald that over the next few months, the system will make certain “transformations.” He did not explicitly say if there would hospital closures or service line cuts, but he did say some hospitals may change their focus to “mostly outpatient services,” according to the report.

Last week, Moody’s Investors Service said many nonprofit hospitals and health systems posted weaker revenue growth and financial stability in 2012 due to several factors, such as patients deferring care. Moody’s and other credit rating agencies have said hospitals should only expect things to get tougher in the coming years as healthcare reform goes into full implementation.
