The seven initiatives are as follows:
1. ICD-10. Organizations will begin shifting from assessment of the impact of ICD-10 to modification of systems as the Oct. 1, 2013 deadline nears.
2. Accountable care organizations. ACO networks are expected to increase during the year.
3. Meaningful use. This year will see the final rule for stage 2 and discussion on stage 3.
4. Health information exchange. State-level HIEs should develop and implement a sustainability plan.
5. Privacy and security. In 2012 the government will publish the HITECH final rules, and health information management professionals will begin implementing the changes.
6. Electronic health records. The use of patient portals will increase and create a greater demand for data governance.
7. Data is the new bottom line. This year it will be particularly important to create, manage and use data, as it is closely tied to reimbursement.
