The study found $176 billion was spent on direct medical costs associated with diabetes care in 2012. The medical costs for people diagnosed with diabetes were 2.3 times higher than the medical costs for people without the disease.
The study also found $69 billion was spent on indirect costs associated with diabetes such as disability, work loss and premature death in 2012.
