Wilkes-Barre General Hospital unveils $40M expansion

Wilkes-Barre (Pa.) General Hospital unveiled its expanded heart and vascular unit Tuesday at a ribbing cutting ceremony, reports the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader.

The $40 million expansion project, which is the second phase of a larger project, added three stories to the hospital. The centerpiece of the latest expansion is a two-story, 34-room intensive and critical care unit. Each room in the two-story ICU is between 400 and 600 square feet. In addition, the expansion added a helipad to the hospital.

The first phase of the project, which was completed in 2012, constructed the first three floors of the heart and vascular unit wing.

"I can't think of a better Valentine's gift for the residents of Wilkes-Barre and across Northeastern Pennsylvania," Wilkes-Barre Mayor Tony George said, according to the report. "[T]he expansion of the intensive care units will allow more patients to receive the expert care they need, close to home and near to their loved ones."
