North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory (R) and the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services opened the facility Tuesday. When construction began in 2010, the project was estimated to cost $138 million. However, new project totals were not disclosed, according to the report.
The three-story, 116-bed facility is about 410,000 square feet. The hospital is one of 14 North Carolina-operated psychiatric hospitals for adults and children with developmental disabilities, mental illness and substance use disorders.
Patients will be moved from the old Cherry Hospital to the new facility late September.
