Indiana University's board of trustees approves design for $340M hospital, academic center

Bloomington-based Indiana University's Board of Trustees approved the design and location for Indianapolis-based Indiana University Health's proposed $340 million hospital and academic center, according to the Indianapolis Business Journal.

The $340 million project will include a 620,000-square-foot hospital on in Bloomington and a 115,000-square-foot academic facility that will hold classrooms. The new complex, to be built on a golf range on Indiana University Bloomington's campus, will replace an older facility about five miles away.

The new hospital will offer inpatient care and outpatient services.

The new hospital's exterior will have a modern appearance with brick highlights and plenty of glass to allow natural light to seep through the building. Patients, staff and visitors will be able to meander through the trails and healing gardens that will surround the buildings. After the project is completed the grounds of the campus will have native plants to Indiana, prairie grass and 400 additional trees.

"This is an incredible investment in our community," Matt Bailey, president of IU Health's south central region, told the Indianapolis Business Journal. "We wanted to get it right."

The hospital is expected to open in 2020.
