The four-bed facility will double the hospital’s current capacity.

Officials said new equipment, including an MRI machine, will allow for faster data delivery and prevent patients from having to drive to nearby Waimea, Hawaii-based North Hawaii Community Hospital.

Design revisions also include additions to the adjacent parking lot, making it more accessible for people with disabilities.

According to the report, hospital officials will conduct drill prior to the opening, practicing patient flow, resource allocation and communication testing.

The project was funded primarily by the Kohala Hospital Charitable Foundation. The remainder of the funds came from the state’s Capital Improvement Project fund.
