The new hospital, estimated to cost $233 million, is slated to open in the summer of 2018.
Franciscan St. Anthony Health President and CEO Dean Mazzoni said upgrading the existing Michigan City hospital wasn’t cost efficient. Instead, the brand new facility will be better suited to meet patient demands.
The new 440,000-square-foot building, which will house 108 beds, will be smaller than the current 150-bed hospital. However, it will have more space for outpatient care, according to the report.
The existing facility will be converted to an inpatient facility for behavioral health and rehabilitation services, and will contain 34 beds.
”Facilities like ours that are building for the future really are building smaller with lean concepts, greater efficiencies and just being able to meet the needs of patients in different ways,” said Mr. Mazzoni, according to the report.
