In the budget proposal, $5.8 billion in funding would also be provided to the VA’s Office of Information Technology to help support cybersecurity, financial management business transformation, claims automation and the infrastructure readiness program, according to the White House.
The VA’s EHR modernization program in partnership with Cerner, which already costs $16.1 billion, has grappled with issues that continue to plague its rollout.
Earlier this month the EHR system at Spokane, Wash.-based Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center and associated clinics were affected by a software glitch that forced the hospitals to stop taking patients.
Following the outage, the VA and Cerner said they would perform a “full root cause analysis” to determine what went wrong.
An inspector general also criticized the EHR rollout, releasing three reports March 17 citing safety concerns.
A budget has yet to be approved by Congress.
