Hospitals and health systems are increasingly investing in their emergency departments to respond to issues such as high wait times, increased patient volumes and need for specialized care.

4. Texas Health Alliance (Fort Worth) — $25 million ED expansion

6. Hardin Memorial Hospital (Elizabethtown, Ky.) — $15 million ED expansion

7. Benefis Health System (Great Falls, Mont.) — $12.5 million ED expansion

8. Beverly Hospital (Montebello, Calif.) — $12 million ED expansion

9. LewisGale Medical Center (Salem, Va.) — $12 million freestanding ER
