Nemours Children's Hospital in Orlando, Fla., opened a sensory room designed to help children with autism while they wait in the emergency room, according to a WFTV report.
The hospital repurposed an ER exam room to create the sensory room, which allows children with autism or other disorders to concentrate on something other than their medical procedure.
Features include a projector that displays shapes, a light dome on the ceiling that responds to the room's noise level, soundproof headphones and a bubble machine.
"Their anxiety lowers, they calm [down] and they are able to have a really positive coping experience with their medical procedure," said Emily Bradley, lead child life specialist at Nemours.
The hospital aims to add two more ED sensory rooms.
