The institute will explore “next-generation capabilities” for Cortana, Microsoft’s digital assistant, according to a recent Microsoft Research Blog post by Roy Zimmermann, director of Microsoft Research Outreach. One of the institute’s goals is to enable Cortana to help with more complex tasks, beyond weather reports and meeting reminders.
“In the future, Cortana may assist with chores from cooking to calendar management, which involve multiple steps, contextual awareness and a rich dialogue with users,” Mr. Zimmermann wrote.
Andrew Shuman, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s applied research team Cortana Engineering, added, “Working with RMIT on the Cortana Intelligence Institute … is an amazing chance to inject new thinking in what we build.”
