5 healthcare moves from Amazon

From releasing new Alexa capabilities for hospitals to backing federal legislation aimed at bringing healthcare home, Amazon continues to strengthen its healthcare presence. Here are five recent healthcare moves from the company as reported by Becker's.

  1. Amazon, Best Buy, CVS Health and three health systems are supporting federal legislation aimed at bringing more healthcare into the home.

  2. Amazon Web Services is teaming up with 3M Health Information Systems to scale 3M's ambient clinical documentation and virtual assistant tools. Under the partnership, the two companies will work to enhance 3M's conversational AI platform so it can be integrated directly into clinicians' workflows.

  3. Amazon released new Alexa capabilities for hospitals that aim to cut down administrative tasks for physicians. The tools will allow patients and medical staff to do audio and video calls between Echo devices and laptops or tablets, route Alexa calls within hospital phone systems, and let patients and caregivers know who's calling.

  4. Philips HealthSuite Imaging said it would move to Amazon's cloud platform so it can speed up diagnosis and treatment for radiologists and other clinicians, improve patient outcomes, and reduce medical imaging costs.

  5. Amazon Pharmacy is partnering with GSK, Kaléo, Novo Nordisk and Dexcom on a feature that automatically adds savings to a patient's medication order when eligible.

  6. Amazon Web Services is working with Somerville, Mass.-based Mass General Brigham, Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Ventures and the American Hospital Association on an accelerator program aimed at easing healthcare burnout that some health systems will assist with.
