Northwell Health's Health Information Technology and Innovation Center, in partnership with the New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based system's clinical research facility, is responsible for the creation of several groundbreaking medical technologies.
HITIC researchers have developed and tested an ultraviolet hospital room sanitizer, a "fin" to help amputees swim, home health and wearable biosensor devices for continuous patient monitoring, a wayfinding smartphone application guiding patients and visitors through Northwell's facilities, connected patient rooms outfitted with voice technology and digital displays, and more.
Many of the projects initially launched within HITIC have led to significant savings across the entire health system. The Imprivata OneSign solution, for example, which streamlines authentication for access to EHRs and other patient data, was first tested in HITIC, resulting in $6 million in savings in its first year, plus $9 million more in consecutive annual savings.
The center is led by Vishwanath Anantraman, MD, Northwell's chief innovation architect. Dr. Anantraman has spearheaded several individual technology projects, including the use of voice-activated devices such as the Amazon Echo to serve as a bedside assistant for both patients and clinicians, which was named one of five finalists for this year's Northwell Health Innovation Challenge.
