4 San Antonio research institutions team up for precision health innovation

The four largest research institutions in San Antonio announced on Oct. 15 the formation of a partnership to provide a collective $800,000 to fund a collaborative initiative in precision therapeutics.

The San Antonio Partnership for Precision Therapeutics will combine the bioscience research and development capabilities of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Texas Biomedical Research Institute, the University of Texas at San Antonio and Southwest Research Institute.

Beyond the institutions' resources, San Antonio's cultural makeup will also play a role in advancing the partnership's innovative efforts in precision therapeutics. According to William Henrich, MD, president of UT Health San Antonio, the city's ethnically diverse population will help researchers develop more broadly accessible treatments.

"This program will completely integrate the approach of precision medicine with the discovery of new treatments, as well as the reformulation of existing drugs and drug combinations to address the growing drug resistance problem," Texas Biomed President and CEO Larry Schlesinger, MD, said in a release. "It's a game-changing approach to healthcare that will allow us to more quickly get therapies to market and work for the majority of those who need it most."
