Tampa General sued for data breach that impacted 1.2 million

Tampa General Hospital is facing a lawsuit for a May 31 data breach that impacted 1.2 million patients, WFTS Tampa Bay reported Aug. 7.

Law firm Morgan & Morgan filed a lawsuit Aug. 7 on behalf of three individuals affected by the breach, alleging that the health system did not notify patients of the breach until two months after it occurred, therefore making those impacted more susceptible to identity theft.

Patient information stolen from Tampa General during the attack included Social Security numbers, names, addresses, phone numbers, health insurance information and some treatment information.

Tampa General said its security system prevented the criminal group from executing a ransomware attack because it was unable to encrypt the data.

The health system said it was also working with the FBI to further investigate the incident.
