1.2 million Tampa General patients' data breached in cyberattack

Tampa (Fla.) General Hospital was hit with a cyberattack earlier this year and a "criminal group" stole 1.2 million patients' confidential information, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

Four things to know:

1. Tampa General identified "unusual activity" on its computer systems May 31 and realized an unauthorized user had access to the health system's data files for the three preceding weeks. However, the hospital's EHR system was not accessed or disrupted.

2. Patient information stolen from Tampa General included Social Security numbers, names, addresses, phone numbers, health insurance information and some treatment information.

3. Tampa General's security system prevented the criminal group from executing a ransomware attack because it was unable to encrypt the data.

4. The FBI is continuing to investigate the incident and Tampa General will notify patients who may have been affected.
