Rethinking cybersecurity terminology may benefit organizations

Thinking of cybersecurity as an "attack" or "war" may not be very productive for organizations, and instead thinking about cybersecurity through the lens of health may be more beneficial, The Wall Street Journal reported June 7.

By focussing on cybersecurity as an external threat or crime, the bad actors get all the attention. This means that organizations focus too much on the perimeter of their security and are more likely to fight back on the attackers' own terms.

By shifting the terminology to that of the internal health of the security system the organization has, companies can be confident in their defensive abilities and in their own advantage of knowing the details of their systems.

"This may not be as glamorous or dramatic as the idea of engaging in a mind-to-mind 'war' with hackers, but it is much more effective," reads the article.
