3 hospitals, health systems facing lawsuits for data breaches

Several hospitals and health systems across the U.S. are facing lawsuits regarding data breach incidents that involved patients' protected health information.

Here are lawsuits involving three hospitals and health systems as reported by Becker's since April 25:

  • On May 3, a patient-led lawsuit was filed against Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems for a January data breach that compromised the protected health information of 1 million patients.

  • On April 26, a patient filed a lawsuit against New York City-based One Brooklyn Health for a November cyberattack that compromised patients' financial information.

  • A lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa alleges that Iowa City-based University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics installed pixel tracking technology on its websites that shared patient data with Facebook. The health system released a statement saying that it did not share confidential patient information with the social media giant.
