Study: Physicians on Fixed Salaries Use E-Mail to Communicate With Patients More Often

Physicians who received a fixed salary used e-mail to communicate with patients more frequently than physicians who were compensated by other means, according to a study from the Center for Studying Health System Change.

The study, which presented findings from the HSC 2008 Health Tracking Physician Survey, reported physicians paid a fixed salary may communicate with patients more generally because they can afford to devote time to activities that are not directly reimbursed.

Physicians who face practice revenue or productivity incentives, on the other hand, may be more likely to focus their time on compensated activities.
