MGMA Survey: Specialty Physicians' Starting Salary Greater in Multispecialty Than in Single-Specialty Practices

A survey by the Medical Group Management Association found median first-year guaranteed compensation was greater for specialty-care physicians in multispecialty practices than those in single-specialty practices, according to an MGMA news release.

According to "Physician Placement Starting Salary Survey: 2011 Report Based on 2010 Data," specialty physicians' median first-year guaranteed salary was $258,677 in multispecialty practices and $240,596 in single-specialty practices. The trend was reversed for primary care physicians, whose median starting salary was $165,000 in multispecialty practices and $172,400 in single specialty practices.

While primary care physicians' median first-year compensation remained constant across the United States, specialty care physicians earned a median of $275,000 for the first year in the Southern U.S. and $220,000 in the East.
