HCA Co-Founder Among the Forbes 400 Richest People

With net worth totaling $5 billion, Thomas Frist Jr., MD, co-founder of Nashville, Tenn.-based Hospital Corp. of America, ranks among the 400 richest people in America, according to "The Forbes 400" list.

Dr. Frist and his family ranked 90th overall in the country in terms of net wealth. Dr. Frist created HCA in 1968 with his father, Thomas First Sr. and Jack Massey. Dr. Frist and his family currently own 15.6 percent of HCA shares and have raked in more than $1 billion in dividends since 2010, according to Forbes. His sons, William R. Frist and Thomas Frist III, both sit on HCA's board of directors.

HCA is the largest for-profit hospital company in the United States with 161 hospitals and 114 ambulatory surgery centers, and three more Florida hospitals are expected to be added to its rolls by the end of this year.

Other notable healthcare people to make "The Forbes 400" list include health information technology entrepreneurs Judy Faulkner and Neal Patterson, who founded Epic and Cerner, respectively.
