Ousted WellPoint CEO Angela Braly Made $20.6M Last Year

Last August, former WellPoint Board Chair, President and CEO Angela Braly stepped down amid pressure from investors, but her total compensation for the year still reached $20.6 million, according to a proxy disclosure filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Ms. Braly's compensation rose more than 55 percent from her 2011 total mostly due stock awards and option awards, which comprised more than $17.8 million of her pay package. Her base salary in 2012 increased slightly to $1.19 million.

Joseph Swedish, former president and CEO of Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health, is the new CEO of the Indianapolis-based health insurer. When he was hired this past February, WellPoint officials said his base salary would be $1.25 million, and he could earn up to $3.8 million in incentives. Also, for fiscal year 2013, Mr. Swedish will be awarded equity incentive grants of up to $8 million.
