Atlanta-based Grady Health System will reduce temporary block pay — extra pay tied to working a set block of shifts — that was implemented during the pandemic by 40% for nurses and some other roles, effective Sept. 26.
Grady recently reduced the temporary block pay systemwide and provided affected employees with a 30-day notice, a health system spokesperson said in a Sept. 3 statement shared with Becker’s.
Nurses’ base pay has not been reduced, the spokesperson said, adding that the system implemented temporary block pay for certain roles to address staffing shortages and reduce reliance on contract labor. Staff members were also informed that the additional pay was temporary, the spokesperson said.
The actual dollar amount of the 40% reduction will vary by position and use of block shifts.
“This adjustment reflects Grady’s ongoing evaluation of compensation and operating costs in response to changing healthcare coverage and reimbursement conditions, including the expiration of enhanced federal subsidies,” the spokesperson said. “We remain committed to providing high-quality patient care while supporting our workforce.”
