Seven of the top 10 occupations with the largest gains in income from 2012-16 are in healthcare, according to SmartAsset

SmartAsset gathered data on average incomes for 815 occupations and ranked the occupations according to the largest gains in income from 2012 to 2016, using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Here are the occupations with their average 2012 and 2016 salaries, along with percent increases since 2012:

1. Orthodontist
Salary in 2012: $186,320
Salary in 2016: $228,780
Percent increase: 23%

2. Anesthesiologist
Salary in 2012: $232,830
Salary in 2016: $269,600
Percent increase: 16%

3. Postsecondary health specialties teacher
Salary in 2012: $100,370
Salary in 2016: $125,430
Percent increase: 25%

4. Psychiatrist
Salary in 2012: $177,520
Salary in 2016: $200,220
Percent increase: 13%

5. Surgeon
Salary in 2012: $230,540
Salary in 2016: $252,910
Percent increase: 10%

6. Family and general practitioner
Salary in 2012: $180,850
Salary in 2016: $200,810
Percent increase: 11%

7. Genetic counselor
Salary in 2012: $55,820
Salary in 2016: $74,960
