That’s according to the “2023 Physician Compensation Report” from Physicians Thrive, which said that orthopedic specialists received an average of $126,000 in incentive bonuses compared with $28,000 for pediatricians in 2022.
For the first time in a decade, every specialty reported some form of incentive bonus, the report said. Individually, 57 percent of specialists reported earning such a bonus in 2022, with primary care providers notching an average incentive bonus of $33,500.
Here are 17 average incentive bonuses by specialty:
- Orthopedics/orthopedic surgery: $126,000
- Ophthalmology: $100,000
- Cardiology: $85,000
- Gastroenterology: $74,000
- Urology: $73,000
- Anesthesiology: $68,000
- Radiology: $66,000
- Pathology: $54,000
- Emergency medicine: $51,000
- OB-GYN: $49,000
- Physical medicine/rehabilitation: $48,000
- General surgery: $46,000
- Psychiatry: $33,000
- Family Medicine: $30,000
- Internal Medicine: $29,000
- Neurology: $29,000
- Pediatrics: $28,000
Orthopedic, cardiology, gastroenterology and urology specialists were also in the top five of 29 physician specialties ranked by annual compensation in the recent 2023 Medscape “Physician Compensation” report.
