UPMC’s Plan to Close Hospital Engenders Protests

University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s plan to close 123-bed UPMC Braddock Hospital on Jan. 31, 2010, is causing a storm of protest, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

UPMC reported that it had invested $60 million in the hospital but had lost $27 million on it in the past six years and expected to lose $10 million a year if it stayed open.

The protesters, who gathered at UPMC’s headquarters, said the hospital is a vital community resource.
