Insurers have applied this policy, called rescission, to policyholders who appear to have been already ill when they signed up for insurance – whether or not they knew it. The new law bans this practice by Sept. 23, except in cases of fraud or misrepresentation.

In addition to United, WellPoint said it would end rescission on May 1 and Aetna and Assurant said they would end the policy ahead of the fall deadline but did not say when.
