The renovation includes the construction of a nine-story tower that will double the hospital’s private patient rooms and will allow for improved services such as new technology and a better plumbing system.

The new tower will house mostly labor and delivery services, allowing for mothers to have private rooms after delivery. In addition to labor and delivery, cardiology, orthopedics and general surgery will be given floors in the new tower.

According to the report, hospital directors and board members decided to move forward on the project after a year of debate, when it was decided that it was worth the risk to give the 1950s ward-style Sarasota Memorial a face lift.
