Under the affiliation agreement, Regional —a 40-bed, nonprofit long-term acute-care facility based at Highline Medical Center’s specialty campus — would be relocated to Highline’s main campus in Burien, Wash., as early as next summer, according to a news release. Highline affiliated with Franciscan last April.

The healthcare organizations expect to complete their definitive merger agreement by the end of this year and implement the affiliation during the first half of 2014, according to the release. The affiliation plans involve Regional operating as a “hospital within a hospital” at Highline with its own CEO, CMO and board of directors.

Regional sought a partner because of Franklin, Tenn.-based Acadia Healthcare’s impending purchase of Highline’s specialty campus and Acadia’s planned service expansion, according to the release.
