MedExpress, based in Morgantown, W.Va., has opened four outlets in the region during the past year and plans to open two more in January.

The health systems have been responding to MedExpress’ arrival in the following ways:

  • UPMC plans to open an urgent care center in Pittsburgh on Dec. 14 and a clinic outside the city by spring.
  • Excela is expanding hours at its three Excela QuikCare centers and will convert an ED into an urgent care center in the spring.
  • Heritage Valley opened a convenient care center and three clinics inside Wal-Mart stores this year.

Excellere Partners, a private equity investment firm in Denver that capitalized MedExpress in 2007, reported that the typical urgent care center visit costs 25 percent less than a visit to a hospital ED.
