An international group of public health and policy experts called for a “turbo-charged” effort to prevent tobacco use worldwide in The Lancet, according to Reuters.

The group of experts wrote that they want to phase out tobacco sales by 2040 to create a “tobacco-free” world in which less than 5 percent of the adult population smokes. According to the group of experts, just 15 percent of people have access to smoking cessation programs.

“A world where tobacco is out of sight, out of mind and out of fashion — yet not prohibited — is achievable in less than three decades… but only with full commitment from governments, international agencies, such as United Nations and World Health Organization, and civil society,” said Robert Beaglehole of the University of Auckland in New Zealand, according to Reuters.
