Aside from their role as medical directors, physicians represent only a small fraction of top administrators at U.S. hospitals and health systems today. Their number has dwindled from a century ago, when physicians ran more than one-third of U.S. hospitals. Physician leadership may now be on the verge of a renaissance, as many hospitals move toward clinical integration.
