The Wellstar Health System filed a certificate-of-need application July 1 to build the seven-story bed tower and add 61 acute care beds to the 633-bed Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. Plans call for transferring some existing beds, the neonatal intensive care unit and some other services to the new tower.

The project also would involve demolishing the hospital’s Baird building. The new tower would be built in its place.
