Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago’s certificate of need application for a pediatric hospital and outpatient center in Downers Grove, Ill. was approved Nov. 5 by the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board.
Lurie Children’s shared plans to develop the hospital in January.
The proposed hospital, which will be Lurie Children’s first inpatient hospital outside its main Chicago location, will be approximately 298,000 square feet and represents an estimated $480 million investment, according to a news release from Lurie Children’s.
The hospital plans to include an emergency department, 48 inpatient beds, operating rooms, diagnostic imaging and outpatient services, along with specialty care areas like oncology, cardiology, gastroenterology and orthopedics.
Pending Village of Downers Grove permit release, Lurie Children’s plans to begin site excavation on the hospital in December and to see its first patients in spring of 2029.
“Every child deserves access to the specialized care they need, as close to home as possible,” Tom Shanley, MD, President and CEO of Lurie Children’s, said in the release. “This approval represents an important step forward in our commitment to meeting the needs of children and families across the region. By expanding our presence in the western suburbs, we have an opportunity to make high-quality pediatric care more accessible and convenient for families while continuing to deliver on our mission.”
