Here are four things to know about the hospital

1. The N.C. Heart & Vascular Hospital will bring together eight work areas originally spread over 1 million square feet, the report states. The single facility will house two hybrid operating rooms and 114 beds. The hospital’s operating rooms will simultaneously act as auditoriums for training.

2. Physicians will perform vascular surgeries, heart bypasses and stent procedures at the facility.

3. Roughly two dozen physicians from WakeMed Health & Hospitals, one of UNC Rex’s rivals in Raleigh, joined UNC Rex seven years ago. As a result, UNC Rex grew its heart and vascular services to compete with area hospitals, according to the report. UNC Rex now has 50 heart and vascular specialists.

4. In response to N.C. Heart & Vascular Hospital, WakeMed and Durham, N.C.-based Duke Health signed an agreement to integrate their heart programs into a single heart service, according to a News & Observer report. The agreement was effective March 1.
