The proposed $115 million construction project calls for adding more rooms to the emergency department, increasing the number of intensive care unit beds and expanding the parking garage. In addition, the ED would be relocated to the ground floor and the ICU would be remodeled to take up two floors.
The expansion is part of Covenant Health’s long-term strategic plan, which has been accelerated by changes in the market, specifically the increased demand for critical care unit beds in Tennessee.
“The board and management of Covenant Health feel strongly that we must keep our covenant and meet the rapidly increasing healthcare needs of the community through the expansion at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center,” said Covenant Health CEO Jim VanderSteeg, according to WBIR.
The Metropolitan Planning Commission and the Knoxville City Council must approve the project.
