Gastonia, N.C.-based CaroMont Health plans to build its first hospital in South Carolina, a neighborhood facility in the Lake Wylie community of York County.
The health system has purchased land on Highway 557 for the project and projects a 2031 opening, according to a Sept. 16 news release. CaroMont Health said it will pursue all required state and local approvals, and construction will begin only after those requirements are met.
The hospital would include an emergency department staffed by board-certified emergency physicians, short-stay inpatient and observation units, surgical and endoscopy services and imaging and laboratory departments. Patients needing higher-acuity care would have access to CaroMont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia and the broader CaroMont Health network. The facility would primarily serve residents of Lake Wylie, Clover, western York County and southern Gaston County, N.C.
CaroMont Health has provided care in York County for more than 20 years through practices in seven specialties, including cardiology, neurology and obstetrics/gynecology.
“CaroMont Health has paced our service expansion with the growth of that community, and adding emergency and hospital care is a natural next step,” President and CEO Chris Peek said in the release. “We want to build a facility that fits the needs of our patients and offers more access to our broader network of care.”
The York County project is the second neighborhood hospital CaroMont Health has planned this year. In June, the system filed a certificate-of-need application with North Carolina to build a similar facility in Cleveland County.
The nonprofit health system operates physician practices, urgent care clinics and emergency facilities across five counties and two states.
